JULES OMBAK

Waves, wild coastlines and the places that keep calling me back.

Hey there!
I paint the space between places - between Sochi and Bali, between mountains and ocean breaks, between the quiet moments of home and the wild rythm of travel.
I paint what I've seen, but more often - what I've felt: movement, memory, energy, longing, freedom.
Every painting is a fragment of my own geography.
Every series - a chapter of a bigger story I'm still writing.

As for me I'm tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas and land on barbarous coasts.

EXPEDITION LOG — JAVAN JOURNEY

6 AM
Central Java

Modern world is a strange place. Before going anywhere, you could virtually ride the streets with Google Maps, look at photos via Instagram, listen to stories of people who already visited and create kind of an image of this place — all from the safety of your screen, untouched by the raw energy of real exploration.

Sometimes expectations are too high. And sometimes reality beats them all.

I heard and read lots of things about Java. Almost everyone I spoke to told that it's super inhabited, poor, unsafe, messy... My close friend even described it as "the pain of soul". And you know? One moment I decided to feel that pain, just to see another kind of reality — the kind maps can't show and filters can't capture.

And standing in the heart of the most inhabited and most explosive (due to numerous volcanoes) island in the World, the only feeling, overloading me, is harmony — with people around, with nature, with the world and with myself... Even though my self-condition wasn't perfect at all.

At that very moment, I thought of a phrase heard somewhere: "Bali is the morning of the world". With all love I have to this magic island — it's not Bali. It's Java.
